Prepare for a flavour fiesta because the capital’s favourite Mexican joint, Benito’s Hat is opening its doors to the hungry people of Oxford on the 24th October 2017.
Opening in the newly refurbished Westgate Social, Shopping Centre, Benito’s promises to shake up the food options on offer by creating a Latin American haven. Benito’s will be bringing their world-famous burritos to the masses of Oxford, as well as launching several new culinary treats, all made on site using authentic Mexican recipes.
Benito’s Hat will be bringing their own brand of Mexican street food to the Westgate Social on Castle Street as part of an exciting, and diverse mix of food and drink operators. The kiosk sits inside The Social which is located on the West side of the Westgate Centre.
For the first time, Benito’s are introducing their El Presidente Burrito to the full-day menu – a particularly drool-worthy burrito stuffed with a trio of pork, beef and chicken and guac’d up to perfection. Hat Trick Tacos also make a welcome addition to the Oxford day menu – 3 soft tacos, one filled with achiote chicken, one with beef brisket barbacoa, and one with balsamic braised pork. Customers will also find quesadillas, hand-cut tortilla chips prepared fresh in the kitchen every day, fresh guacamole, made with hass-avocadoes, esquites (sweetcorn with feta & oregano), chipotle coleslaw, and to finish it all off, get stuck into tres leches (three milk) cake, with vanilla and cinnamon or crunchy churros and chocolate. Perfect for those with a sweet tooth!
Our little amigos will be able to get a taste for authentic Mexican food too, with appropriately sized taco and quesadilla options, as well as a choice of apple or orange juice, and Jude’s ice cream for dessert!
Keeping you watered as well as fed, guests will be able to quench their thirst with one of Benito’s classic frozen Margaritas, or will be able to choose from their range of Mexican beer. On offer will also be soft drinks and homemade Agua Frescas like Limeade, Hibiscus & Horchata. Locally roasted filter coffee will also be available for those that like a caffeine buzz with their burrito.
Benito’s Hat looks after all of those with food preferences and allergies extremely well with gluten free corn tacos and a large range of vegetarian and vegan options available all day, every day.
We love fresh, healthy and vibrant ingredients. That is what Mexican food and drink is all about . . . and maybe a little spice . . . and OK sometimes tequila too.
Well this summer at Benito’s Hat we have made a fantastic fresh super-juice and a knock-out margarita to make the most of all of the above.
A classic way to sip tequila in Mexico is to do so with a chaser of a beautiful green mixture of the freshest produce that the fields of Mexico has to offer. Typically this means coriander, mint, lime, pineapple and sometimes a little heat. We have made our very own version of this to be enjoyed i) as a fresh super-juice, and ii) as a verdita margarita!
For the margarita we have combined all those fresh ingredients, muddled in a tiny piece of habanero chilli, and a generous measure of 100% blue agave tequila, for a drink that packs a delicious punch.
For the agua fresca (fresh juice) we have used the same ingredients but, in place of the tequila, have added some 100% cloudy apple juice for a drink that will cool you down, warm you up, open your eyes wide, and give you a fantastic vitamin boost all in one go.
Since the humble beginnings of Benito’s Hat, Felipe and I have tried to do things a little differently (and of course better). I remain convinced that he is the best Mexican chef in the business. His balsamic pork shoulder, black beans with avocado leaves and tangy salsa verde are without compare. However, the fillings that we serve every day were never going to be enough and we have always been committed to a regular programme of changing specials.
The list of delicious, short-term fillings has included, lamb barbacoa, spicy wild mushroom, and pork belly with crackling and apple salsa to name a few. However, for the first time ever we have decided to launch two specials at once . . . and what’s more . . . we have decided to make one of them lobster burrito.
As far as we can tell, there has never been a lobster burrito sold in the UK and we were determined to make this ground-breaking lobster burrito something to really go down in history. Therefore, it contains not only the lobster and parsley fritters, but also sliced hass avocado, hand-shredded white and red cabbage, black beans, rice, hand-chopped pico de gallo, a lobster and crab reduction and, wait for it, two crispy bacon rashers. It is awesome!
The one disappointment is that, due to the preparation time and effort, we can only serve it the after 5pm (at any Benito’s Hat excluding King’s Cross). We hope that you will come and give it a go as this is not your average burrito.
Not satisfied with launching a lobster, crab, avocado and bacon burrito, we have also created some fantastic fish tacos (you are welcome to have this in burrito or salad format too!). We serve these delicious cod fritters, with hand-shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle mayonnaise, and a squeeze of lime. No time constraints on this on – it is available all day for your ordering pleasure!

Super seeds now available at Benito’s and OhMyGuac is back this January!
Just in case you are not satisfied with free guac this January – if you needed a bit more health and deliciousness – we’ve added some super seeds to sprinkle over your burrito.
The health benefits of avocadoes have been much publicised in recent years (packed with over twenty vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and anti-oxidents (of particular note are vitamin B6, Omega-6 oils and potassium); great for your heart, circulation, and your skin – in case you’ve not been listening to the hype!). They have also been part of the Mexican diet for thousands of years with the Aztecs going so far as to name them ‘The Fruit of the Gods’.
They are also a bit on the pricey side so we charge you if you would like our homemade, hass-avocado gauc in your burrito, taco or salad . . . BUT NOT THIS JANUARY!
Need a few more anti-oxidents after the party season?
We know that a lot of people like to focus on the healthier side of things in January so we have added a new topping for you. You can now add a sprinkling of seedy goodness in your burrito with the addition of chia and sunflower seeds.
Chia seeds are another ancient super food from Mexico (the word means ‘strength’ in Mayan). They are a great source of vitamins, nutrients, antioxidents and fibre – more Omega-3s than salmon.
It’s that time of year again where restaurants across the land role out something to celebrate the festive season. We are no different in wanting to get in to the Christmas spirit but have figured you are getting enough turkey elsewhere and so have gone for something a little different this year.
Our Christmas burrito and taco filling is an orange-infused pork belly that comes with crunchy crackling and a cranberry (that was our traditional bit) and sweet chilli salsa.
